There were some high-scoring games in the North Northumberland League, with some closer than others.

In Division One, Acklington Athletic lost 4-3 to Rothbury. Goalless at half time, the game came to life as Chris McGuilvery and Paul Christianson gave Acklington a two goal lead.

Adam Hall and Neil Johnson then netted for Rothbury to level the game but a second Christianson goal restored Acklington's lead. Rothbury hit back with two late goals from Craig Sutton to take the points.

People in Northumberland are getting good adult social care, according to a new national inspection.

The Commission for Social Care Inspection has given Northumberland's adult services department a two-star rating, and says it has "excellent capacity" for improvement.

Berwick MP is the North's newest knight

MP Sir Alan Beith travelled to Buckingham Palace yesterday to received his knighthood from the Queen.

The Berwick representative and longest-serving Liberal Democrat MP, whose constituency covers the Rothbury area, said he was still surprised when people refer to him with the prestigious title.

Sir Alan, who has been MP for 35 years and is former deputy leader of the party, said: "It's good for democracy for Parliament to be recognised as something that is good for the community."

Northumbria Healthcare has recruited 13 new modern matrons to work in Rothbury Community Hospital and some of its other hospitals.

Rosemary Stephenson, the trust's director of nursing, said: "These matrons will oversee a group of wards and departments providing leadership and giving support. This means there is a dedicated person responsible for directing nurses in every ward and department across the trust.

"These matrons will make sure we care for patients in the way they want to be cared for. They will drive up standards by considering existing practice and looking for ways to improve this."

People in Northumberland are being urged to have their say on executive decision-making arrangements for the county's new super-council which takes over in April.

Consultations on the issue close on Friday so residents are being reminded to comment before it is too late.

A Rothbury-based search and rescue expert is to help police in a developing European country improve their chances of finding missing people.

Pete Roberts and his business partner Dave Perkins, who set up the Northumberland-based Centre for Search Research 11 years ago, will run a three-day course in Skopje in Macedonia in early December.

Their audience will be 20 senior police officers from the 450-strong rapid deployment unit of the country's national police force which has access to police and military helicopters.

Beith backs energy efficiency drive

A North MP has backed a winter campaign to heat homes through energy efficiency.

Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick, is supporting an annual drive by fuel poverty campaigners to raise awareness of how energy efficiency measures can make homes warmer, cheaper and healthier to live in; and what assistance is available from the government.

North Northumberland Football League Division One leaders Berwick Town proved too strong for Craster Rovers as they netted six before half time and another five after the break.

Rob Armstrong netted four, Andrew Gibson three and there was one goal apiece for Jordan Ainslie, Thiago Ferreira, Alan Jess and Sean Simpson.

A well contested game saw Ashington Athletic and North Sunderland share a 1-1 draw. Darren Thompson put the visitors ahead in the 65th minute but Ashington equalized with 10 minutes to go.

Superhome of future planned near Rothbury

Plans have been tabled for a ground-breaking country house in Northumberland. The building, proposed for a lakeside setting near Longhorsley, is believed to be the first in the North East under planning guidance which encourages exceptional, innovative, and quality design of residential properties in rural areas.

Newcastle architects Reid Jubb Brown have been working for three years on details of Lake House, planned for the Ghyllheugh estate.

An application has been submitted to Alnwick District Council, and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment has also been consulted.

Gin business diversifies Thropton farm

A gin business is diversifying a farm business near Thropton.

Sloe Crafts, at Lorbottle West Steads Farm, Thropton, on the edge of Northumberland National Park, specialises in sloe gin.

Owner Helen Farr launched the business three years ago to diversify the farm she and her husband run.
