A stunning new country house planned for a site near Rothbury is set to act as a test case for the new PPS7 planning guidance in the North East.

Architects Reid Jubb Brown have put forward plans to Alnwick District Council for the house at Ghyllheugh near Rothbury after three years of painstaking preparation.

The application has been sent to Alnwick and CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) for consultation on the proposal.

PPS7 is a special kind of application, which encourages the exceptional, innovative, quality design of residential properties in rural areas.

Kevin Brown, the architect responsible for "Lake House", as the property has come to be known, said: "This has been one of the most exciting and challenging commissions of my career.

The brief from the client demanded an innovative new home incorporating the very latest in new, sustainable technologies and a design that is both bold and exciting, yet functional and liveable.

Lake House will represent globally the best the North East has to offer in terms of creativity, innovation and technology.

"It has been designed in the region, will be built using the very latest techniques by craftsmen from the area, and will use materials which, wherever possible, will be provided by the Ghyllheugh estate itself and other local sources."

The basic structure of Lake House is a sculpted shell made from green oak, forming waves and curves. Part of the roof will be clad in overlapping lengths of oak from the Ghyllheugh Estate and part will be covered in sedum.

A decision on the planning application is expected within the next two months.

Isn't the proposed site one of special scientific interest? I know that there are many rare lichens and bryophytes there. Please stop this senseless destruction of our natural environment.
