A draft plan outlining the future of Northumberland National Park has been unveiled.

This is the first new management plan in six years and it forms the basis of how the countryside around the Cheviots and Hadrian's Wall can be protected for the next 20 years.

The plan also includes ways to address the impact of climate change, efforts to balance ecology with the local economy and increasing the number of people visiting the park.

Route changes are being introduced on cut-price bus services in Northumberland in a bid to provide a better deal for passengers.

Operator Go North East is making the changes to its Bargain Bus services from Monday February 9 to improve reliability and speed up some journey times.

The company introduced a number of new Bargain Bus destinations in November and, after monitoring the services and listening to passenger feedback, is ready to make some adjustments.

Work to improve safety at an A1 crossing in Northumberland where three people were killed should finally begin next month.

Pensioners Harold and May Fox, 76 and 71, of Swarland, and driver Stanley Loftus, 82, of Vale House, Jesmond, Newcastle, died when their car was in collision with another at the crossing at Guyzance in September 2007.

New Northumberland council will keep logo

Northumberland County CouncilNorthumberland's new super council is to retain the existing county council's official logo when it takes over following local government reorganisation in April.

A working group has concluded there is merit in reviewing the 35-year-old logo to ensure it reflects the new unitary council's vision and values.

However, the need to prioritise effective service delivery from April 1 means it will be retained for the time being.

Posh bingo night at Linden Hall

Linden Hall near LonghorsleyWomen in the North East have been invited to an evening of glamour in aid of charity.

The Macdonald Linden Hall Golf and Country Club, near Morpeth, is holding a posh bingo event to raise money for Action for Children.

The 'Clickety Chicks' fundraising event is an alternative game of bingo, with a cocktail reception and three course supper. For tickets for the event on March 26, priced at £40, contact Linda on 01325 308180 or email linda.mcdonald@actionforchildren.org.uk.

Tomorrow will see the launch of a new free newspaper for Journal readers in Northumberland.

New clinics at Rothbury Community Hospital

Northumbria healthcare has expanded its Parkinson's Disease clinics and is now offering the service to patients at Rothbury Community Hospital, saving patients travelling to Alnwick or Morpeth for check-ups and advice.

Parkinson's Disease specialist nurse Tina Mahan will be helping to run the clinic alongside Dr Brian Wood.

Recession beating advice for Rothbury farmers

English Farming and Food Partnerships is holding workshops in Rothbury and elsewhere in Northumberland to offer advice on how farmers could ride out the recession.

The sessions will explain how arable, dairy and livestock farmers can work together to capitalise on the current economic climate, saying that customers are realising the importance of locally-produced food because of the fall in sterling and the current economic gloom.

Using its Share to Farm initiative, EFFP will be showing farmers how they can work together to reduce costs and market their produce to a wider audience.

Two goals in the last two minutes saved Berwick blushes in their derby clash with Springhill.

Berwick United Reserves, playing with home advantage in the Division Two meeting, took the lead when Martin Tait opened the scoring.

But Springhill hit back to lead with goals from David Jardine, Andrew Skelly and Kristian Neil.

Talks are continuing in a bid to resolve a long-running dispute over the fees paid to the owners of independent care homes for the elderly in Northumberland.

Officials from the county council and Care Trust have been in negotiations with dozens of private sector operators for 18 months over how much they should be paid for providing residential care for elderly and disabled people.
