Rothbury fail to score in four-goal game

Players in the North Northumberland League enjoyed the recent relative good weather and played some of their hectic fixture list.

Teams got straight back into the action with some high scoring matches. Acklington Athletic and Craster Rovers took out the frustration of the last few weeks on each other with a 4-4 draw in their Division One clash.

Phil Grey with a hat trick and a Steven Watson goal were not enough for Craster as the home team hit back to share the points with goals from Richard Lemon, Kevin Kirby, David Littlefair and Steven Pearce.

North Sunderland also scored four times, but their hosts Rothbury had no reply in this game. It was a good game with two goals from Neil Macfarlane and single goals from Scott Hunter and Gareth Pearson settling the game for the visitors.

Alnmouth lost 2-1 at home to Ashington Athletic. Stuart Marshall gave Alnmouth a 25th minute lead with Sean Dixon equalising for Ashington after 40 minutes. Neither side could make the breakthrough after half time until a goalmouth scramble following a corner saw Luke Bunting prod home the winning goal with the last kick of the match.

Berwick Town, however, won at home against Bedlington Terriers Reserves in the other Division One match. The division leaders were made to work hard for this win with the game being settled by a 20th minute first half effort from Stuart Coyle to end it 1-0.

In Division Two, Embleton won convincingly at home, slotting home five against Alnmouth United. A David Drysdale hat trick after two, four and 20 minutes plus a Chris Chishom goal after eight minutes gave Embleton a great start and with James Thorp adding a fifth after half time before Jordan Watson grabbed a consolation for Alnmouth.

Bamburgh Castle and Berwick Town Reserves, on the other hand, were unable to score against each other.

Neither side could make the break through as the teams played out this goalless draw.

A Mark Dunlop hat trick in the first twenty minutes put Belford ahead at half time against visitors Hedgeley Rovers. Steven Shendon pulled a goal back after half time for Hedgeley but Andy Thompson netted a fourth for Belford to make it 4-1.

Wooler lost 3-0 at home, to Berwick United Reserves. Two Andrew Burgon goals and a Martin Tait effort sealed this win for Berwick as Wooler again failed to turn chances into goals.

Lynemouth Reserves ended up locked 2-2 against Springhill. Steven Ramsay gave Springhill the lead but Dean Short equalised two minutes later. Kristian Neil after 25 minutes saw the visitors ahead at half time but Liam Grisdale equalised for Lynemouth after 55 minutes.

Rothbury Reserves did not trouble hosts Alnwick Town Reserves, who won 5-0. In a wind-spoilt game Dale Kennedy, Colin Bickerton and James Jackson gave Alnwick a half time lead with further goals by Neil McFall and Stephen Hogg sealing the win after half time.

There was one cup game, when Lowick United hosted Lynemouth in an NFA Minor Cup quarter final.

Missed chances and defensive errors cost the visitors after John Ramm had given them the lead with Ashley Smyth adding a second after 25 minutes.

A defensive error allowed Colin Young to pull a goal back before half time and then Anthony Murray equalised from the penalty spot on 75 minutes. A Paul Murray free kick found the net after 80 minutes to give Lowick a 3-2 win.
