Zulus heading for Nunnykirk

Pupils at a Northumberland school will be transported thousands of miles tomorrow when the sights and sounds of South Africa come to their school.

The Lions of Zululand are a group of traditional African dancers and musicians from KwaZulu Natal in South Africa and they will be running a music, art and dance workshop at Nunnykirk Centre for Dyslexia near Morpeth.

Nunnykirk headteacher Mrs Carol Hodgson said: "The students are very excited about this event. Art, music and culture are an important part of life here at Nunnykirk and it will be great that the pupils will be able to experience the Lions of Zululand and I know they will gain a lot from the day."

Young and novice sheepdog handlers are being urged to have a crack at a series of trials being run specially for newcomers.

The Northumberland League Sheepdog Trials is organising the programme for a third year, with the David Leach Cup - named after the former agricultural editor of The Journal - presented to the best handler under 25.

A tree planting ceremony will take place next week to celebrate the inauguration of the new Northumberland County Council.

Council leader Jeff Reid and chief executive Steve Stewart will be planting an oak tree in the grounds of County Hall, Morpeth, on Wednesday at 1pm.

They will also be officially raising the new county council flag.

Meanwhile, residents across the county can still give their opinions on how they would like the new-look authority to tackle problems in their community.
