Elsdon Fete a success despite weather

With a Bank Holiday to enjoy before autumn officially sets in, Northumbrians made the most of their three days off with another set of country shows.

Elsdon Fete attracted several hundred people and raised money for the upkeep of St Cuthbert's Church (pictured).

One of the organisers, Roger Bolam, said: "Because the weather was inclement and threatening we held the whole fete inside the church itself, and it worked very well."

Harbottle headteacher ordained

A headteacher from a Coquetdale school has been ordained as a Church Minister.

Sue Joyner, head at Harbottle First School, was one of 12 new priests and deacons ordained at St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle.

She said: "As a priest, my faith will become very public, but I won't lose the human, personal aspect of it. I hope God and the Church can use my whole life to point out Christ in our world, and in the lives of individuals."

Among others becoming priests were a former policeman and a retired GP.

The Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Rev Martin Wharton, presided at the ordination service.

Special day for Coquetdale churches

Historic churches in a part of Northumberland are opening their doors this weekend.

Upper Coquetdale Churches Together (UCCT) has organised the open day at 10 places of worship this Saturday to give people who would not normally go into churches the chance to enjoy the beauty and history that lies within each.

It is also being hailed as a much- needed social occasion for an area which was hit by flooding last September.

Calls to remember Northumberland's patron saint

Today marks a special day on the North East calendar as we celebrate the life of the patron saint of Northumberland, St Cuthbert.

Often regarded as the most popular saint of medieval times and one of the most important, March 20 sees people celebrate the anniversary of the death of the region's own patron saint.

Born in 634 AD, Cuthbert was born in the Lammermuir Region where he grew to work as a young shepherd.
