The National Trust will be opening its Cragside property for free during February half term to kick-start a year of celebrations to mark 200 years of its creator Lord Armstrong.

There will be a number of activities taking place at the Rothbury property over half term, including family trails and walks.

Fight back against fraudsters

Northumberland Trading Standards is urging people in the county to fight back against the fraudsters this February by taking part in a major campaign.

The Scamnesty 2010 campaign runs from February 1 to 26 and will involve people dropping mail scams they receive through their letterbox into designated Scamnesty boxes which will be placed across Northumberland.

Online scams can also be reported via the virtual Scamnesty bin at www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/scamnesty.

Luxury antiques weekend at Linden Hall

Linden Hall Hotel will once again play host to exhibitors from March 12-14 as part of the popular boutique-style event, now in its third year.

Whether you're on the look-out for an expensive, showstopping addition to your interior décor, or want to browse for practical and affordable pieces, organisers are promising something for all.

Father Christmas to visit Cragside

The National Trust's Cragside estate at Rothbury will be playing host to Father Christmas for the first time.

A grotto has been built for him on the weekend on December 12-13 in Cragside's education room in the courtyard complex, which also houses the trust's gift shop and restaurant.

Santa will be a Cragside on December 12-13 between 11am-3pm.

Northumberland artists will be taking part in this year's Christmas Art Tour.

The festive tour is organised by Network Artists and takes place in twenty different venues around the region, running on weekends until Christmas.

Art lovers and Christmas present seekers will have the chance to look around at artists' work, often in beautiful surroundings, while enjoying a friendly seasonal welcome from the artists themselves in most of the events.

In Elsdon Village Hall from 11-13 December local artists Shirley Jennings, Carolle & Sarah Morpeth, Keith Maddison and Boo Mitford will be showcasing their work. The opening times are 10am- 4pm (11am- 5pm for most other events in the tour).

Craft fair in Jubilee Hall

A heritage crafts event will be held in the Jubilee Hall in Rothbury on Sunday from noon to 4pm which will give visitors the chance to try their hands at activities.

Among local crafters at the event will be Potted History, Northumbria Basketry, Small Axe Creative WoodCrafts, Coccuveda, and Northumbria Lace Makers.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is taking to the road to attract new recruits.

A series of events are being held across the county to inform people of career opportunities with the service.

Netherton & Thropton nostalgia photos

The social calendar focuses on the Rothbury area this week, with both Netherton and Thropton holding events, so this week's Journal Extra nostalgia feature focuses on these two villages.

On Saturday Netherton is enjoying its monthly folk club in the memorial hall, while it is the Thropton Village Show on the same day.

Expert hooked on Coquet fishing history

Angling academic Dr Craig Armstrong found himself hooked on one of his study projects.

He was asked by Northumberland National Park's Cheviot Hills Heritage Project to investigate the history and importance of salmon and sea trout to the River Coquet in the county.

The initial idea came from villagers in Alwinton in Upper Coquetdale, which is one of the communities taking part in the Cheviot venture.

Weather-hit Rothbury concert rescheduled

A flood-hit concert has been rescheduled.

The King Edward VI High School Summer Concert was originally planned to take place in Rothbury in July.

But bad weather caused flooding of roads and police advised that the event should be cancelled.
